My women’s group is currently doing a bible study on encouraging one another. In one activity we listed ways in which we could encourage different people we encounter in our lives. One category of people we listed encouraging things for were strangers.

A few weeks ago, while running errands, I found a blue piece of paper on my passenger side windshield. It was raining and very windy. I first looked at other cars parked to see if there were blue flyers placed on everyone’s windshield, but there wasn’t. This was a note left by a stranger.

The note said:

Hi!

I apologize, my door scraped your back passenger door. My phone number is xxx. Please text or call and I’d be happy to pay for the cost of repair.

Sorry Again,

Derek

I looked at my rear passenger door and sure enough there was a scrape and dent. In that moment, I stood in the rain holding the note, while looking at my door thinking, “Wow, this is refreshing. They actually left a note apologizing and wanting to pay for repairs? Wow.”

.

Jason contacted him where he requested an estimate. We provided the estimate and a few days later we got an envelope with a check for the full amount of the estimate, some cash, and another note. The note said:

Jason,

Here is the check for damages. Please also accept the extra money for the inconvenience of having to take the car in, etc.

God Bless,

Derek

We just don’t see this kind of accountability. We have gotten accustomed to expecting the worse out of people. The notes and gesture of making something right, are beautiful examples of encouragement through integrity that we can extend to a perfect stranger. It’s encouraging to know that this can happen, even amidst the ugliness and vitriol that’s so prevalent. It’s encouraging to know that there are still good people, who are good when no one is watching. It’s fitting that Derek closes with “God Bless.”

.

Romans 1:12 states, “…I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.” Romans 15:5 states, “May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus.”

.

Thank you Derek for encouraging my faith with yours.
