9:37

Amidst all the headlines that stoke fear and uncertainty, the thing that keeps coming to me is the full armor of God bestowed to all who believe. All of the pieces of armor are significant (belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet, and sword) because they all go together beautifully. But the piece of armor that sticks out today, is the helmet of salvation.

The helmet is intended to protect our minds. Our minds are incredibly vulnerable as we read all the headlines, and some difficult circumstances playing out. We should be informed and do our part in preventing the spread, not just for ourselves, but for our neighbors (even the ones that are acting as if nothing is going on). But we must be vigilant to what we feed our minds…now more than ever. Our minds are powerful as it creates conscious and subconscious thoughts. We can brood over the headlines and insidiously become prisoners of fear and uncertainty.

We must counterbalance the grim headlines and news stories. Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:8 to “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” There is great wisdom in that advice because the enemy is constantly attacking our minds to erect strongholds that keep us from the knowledge of God. The enemy wants us to succumb to fear.

Putting on our helmet reminds us of our salvation and our identity…. who we are in Christ Jesus. Our identity in Christ is what allows us to experience joy and peace in the middle of the storm. We must “Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love.” (1 Corinthians 16:13).
