“The human eye is drawn to light. We can’t help it, it just happens.”  (Jesus talking to Nicodemus in The Chosen)

I would say there is more that is attracted to the light than just the eye. Our planet revolves around a big ball of light that greets us every morning. Plants turn their leaves towards the light (heliotropism) to maximize their physical nourishment.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) To follow Jesus means to believe in Him, to trust Him, and the results are life and light for the believer (Wiersbe, Be Alive). It doesn’t mean we won’t experience dark seasons, because believers are not spared trials. But it does tell us that Jesus is the beacon of light to show us the way when things are bleak. Jesus is our hope when we don’t know what to do or think.

Even a sliver of light cuts through darkness. Light reveals. What it reveals can be frightening and freeing in the same breath. People will deliberately choose to fumble around in darkness because they love darkness instead of light (John 3:19). People will not come into the light for fear their deeds will be exposed (John 3:20) including every poor choice and their consequences. Sometimes people don’t want to come into the light because they know they will have to give up things they have come to love….self serving things that stroke their pride.

Nothing can hide in the Light, all is revealed.

We can and should take every decision, every circumstance and shine the light of Jesus on it to see it for what it is and make the right decision. The world will say “do what thou wilt”; if it feels good and makes you happy, do it. The world will not just say that sin is ok, it will dress sin up to appeal to as many varying appetites as possible. The world will give sin legal standing. The cost of sin is spiritual death and walking in darkness.

The Light not only reveals…it heals….more on that next time.
