I remember my papi taking me on a car ride when I was about 15 years old. He talked to me about suicide and how it was never the answer. He said, “It may storm and rain for what seems like forever, but always remember that the sun has to come out. The storm can’t last forever.” This stuck with me, not just as it applied to suicide but as it applied to the trials life brings. As a public health nurse, I know this will get worse before it gets better.
But on a walk yesterday, while enjoying the sun on my face and arms and legs, I realized something else that I have witnessed in the wake of every disaster ….the human spirit. Calamities pull the veil and reveal people. Sometimes ugliness we never thought possible surfaces. Sometimes we see kindnesses paid to strangers that bring us to tears.
Look for the good…. it is there ……
