On Monday morning of November 15, our dog Maximus had a sudden attack and died. He was a beautiful nine-year-old Presa Canario. He took his last breaths with family at his side and he did not suffer. Our household has been an emotional mess. We miss our gentle giant, his bowling ball sized head and his soft ample jowls that he would lay on your knee and look up with eager eyes begging for pets.

Loss provides perspective for things we take for granted.

Loss ushers in gratitude- like salt bringing flavor to every moment and detail in life.

I hurt because Max is gone, but I am so grateful for the nine years he enriched our lives. He was a protector of our home and children.  He was a companion who sensed sorrow and would come to lay up against you. And if you ever saw him with a special needs child, his tenderness and gentleness would melt your heart.

On the night of November 15, I dreamt with Max. I looked up and he was yards ahead crossing my path. He stopped and turned his head to his left to look at me. Our eyes met in acknowledgment of one another as if to say, “goodbye.” He turned his head forward and continued walking through an opened door.

We miss you and love you Maximus.
