For the longest time, I could not say “I love you” to God while praying. Those words were reserved for people I knew well, and therefore I did not utter them lightly or just to anyone. This changed when a woman I was helping in a class said it to me. She has a severe form of cerebral palsy that forces her to use an electric wheelchair and leaves her unable to hold a book to read. She expressed gratitude for helping her and said, “I love you.” I stood dumbfounded by her sincerity and her unbridled willingness to love. I thought, “She doesn’t even know me.” “How can she love so easily.” The pure beauty of that moment stayed with me, moved me to desire that for myself. I brought it to the Lord in my prayers. I confessed my difficulty in saying those words to people I became recently acquainted with and realized the heart I yearned for was God’s heart for people. I learned to let go of many of my “prerequisites” to love. In doing so, I found more freedom and more joy than I had. And I still have a long way to go but…..It is in loving others and spending time with God that I finally got to a place where I could sincerely utter, “I love you, Lord.” And what do you know….Psalm 18:11 says just that.
