Our heart constantly pumps lifegiving oxygenated blood to our entire bodies, playing a critical role in our physical health. We cannot live without a heart. But if all we ever see is the physical condition of our heart, we miss the spiritual side of the heart.

God offers us spiritual armor to protect us. The breastplate of righteousness is one piece of armor (Ephesians 6:14) and it protects the spiritual condition of our heart. “The heart is the control room of our lives, and when we try to take control, we will only end up hurting ourselves and others”  (Max Lucado’s Life Lessons from Psalms). We are born selfish and sinful but through surrendering our hearts and our lives to Jesus, we are made new.  Jesus declares, “I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5).”

When we pray Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”, what difference does it make? It furthers the transformation that began when we accepted Christ. It removes the poison of spite or begrudgment and infuses kindness and love to the acts we do for others. It cleanses the intent and motivation behind our actions and words. It brings us closer, as we aspire and ascend, to be Christ like in our everyday lives.

It is never a perfect journey. That is why some are reluctant to pray for God to search them and know the condition of their heart (Psalm 139:23). It takes an extraordinary amount of humility to stand naked and have every sin pointed out, even if the One who does it is our maker who knows it all anyway…who loves us anyway…who calls us His children anyway.
