Summer of 2021 has been full of travels to colleges for Justin. All have promising programs for mechanical engineering. The very last one was John Brown University, a Christian university in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. I distinctly remember telling him, the night before we traveled, to not bring a skull t-shirt. And what do I see when I return from Pour Jons Coffee Shop with latte in hand? I see my son donning a dimply smile and not just any ‘ole skull t-shirt….oh no….it is a Zulu Foxtrot skull t-shirt, which I won’t interpret for you. Ask a veteran or someone who has been in the military. Let’s just say that of all the skull t-shirts to pick from this qualifies as a top contender for least edifying t-shirt to wear to visit a Christian university. He sees my face and asks, “What?” Taking a deep breath, I say, “Do you not remember me telling you ‘no skull t-shirts’ hijo? We are visiting a Christian University and you pick the Zulu Foxtrot skull t-shirt?” As I see this washing over his face he crumples onto the hotel bed and curls up in the fetal position covering his face and says, “I don’t deserve breakfast.” Anyone who knows our boy knows that he has a big heart and sometimes takes things a lot harder than he should. I could see some playfulness there but sensed he was beating himself up as well. I laughed and grabbed his arm to pull him up and told him, “Come on! Let’s find a place to go buy a t-shirt and then go get breakfast!” And so we found a store and bought the “Nope, not today” t-shirt. Then we proceeded to Cathy’s Corner and had a delicious breakfast.

His father roared in laughter after regaling him with our morning.

Adolescent boys….never a dull moment. And how we love the one we have been blessed with.
